There's a Wall Under There

We've been having really fantastic summer-like weather here for the past few days, and I've been taking advantage of it in an effort to reclaim our yard. I finished cleaning out the gutters yesterday, save for a 12-inch section on the left side of the house that I can't reach from the roof. I also coaxed a large limb down off of the steepest part of the roof, fortunately with no shingle damage.

Wednesday, I gathered a bunch of large limbs in the yard (we've had some strong, tornado-like winds recently), cut the fig tree back to 1/3 of its size, and pruned a rosebush back into, well, a rosebush. Not a rose tree.

Thursday, I raked the remaining leaves out of all the beds (planning to bag them this weekend) and unearthed the wall on the northern side of the house; it was totally overgrown with ivy. The wild violets seem to have taken over the yard, but that doesn't bother me too much. We should probably reseed our lawn this fall, but for now we have a velvety, purple carpet in the backyard. It adds to the English-garden feel.

The thing that will improve the yard most (not to mention add to the resale value of the house)--both aesthetically and functionally--will be to finally have the driveway repaved. I'm going to finish working out the design this year, so that hopefully we can accomplish that by this time next spring.
