Today's Project

I team-teach a Sunday School class of 4th and 5th-graders. We use a pretty cool teaching model which designates a monthly theme (March is "Triumphal Entry'), identifies relevant scripture passages, and each week explores the scripture via different activities--art, music, science, drama, etc.

This week is Art. (It's funny--I think I've been assigned Art every month since I started doing this.) I've decided that the kids are going to make Palm Sunday frescoes. I've raided my photo collection of European cathedrals for examples, so we can actually have a mini-lesson on the medium. I've got a bunch of cardboard backing squares which we're going to cover in dry-wall mud; then, as it dries, we're going to paint our scenes on them with watercolors to create a series of story-telling tiles.

I only halfway planned this activity last night, so I haven't had time to try it out... I hope it turns out to be as awesome as I'm envisioning. I'm sure it will be as messy!
