This Is Not Working

Among the many unfinished projects around my house, mounting the window treatments I made for the music room was not one I expected to have to add to the list. However. My spiffy new draperies have been folded up on the floor so long I expect I'll have to press them again before putting them on the windows.

My problem is my brackets. I had 6 brackets in the style I wanted to use. Actually, I had four (painted white) from the guest room at the old house, but I couldn't find two more so I had almost given up on the style--until my very awesome mother produced some matching extras (unstained) from her attic. Go, Mom!

Next, I had a problem locating rods like I wanted to use. I finally found one--but only one. Later I found two more. In the process, I altered my plan to include rods with an antiqued gold finish, instead of a sort of honeyed-walnut finish. So, now I have my rods and all 6 brackets--four white and two unstained.

Well, actually two-and-a-half white and one unstained... I've been experimenting on the other three. I can't find any gold paint to match! I've tried various spray paints (one out of an expensive "how to give your furniture that antique crackle look" kit) and this really awesome little can of gold varnish that I was convinced would work (well, according to the picture), but instead of a nice, matte gold finish, it produced a super-glossy, translucent, gold-tinged sheen. That was on one of the white brackets, and it was a really cool effect (cooler even than the picture on the crackle kit), but not the look I'm going for.

I've looked at all the paint stores... arrgh. Why is this so hard? I just want to hang my draperies!
