Camp Caching Geo-Swag

I went on a little shopping expedition this afternoon in search of Bible/church-themed geo-swag to put in the caches that G and I are putting together for camp next week. Assuming we limit our interest group to 30 kids or so, we'll need about that many of 5 or 6 different types of items. My search yielded some cool, carved wooden trinkets--crosses, doves, hearts, etc. and some nifty, palm-sized meditation stones with inspirational words etched on them ('peace', 'hope', 'wisdom', 'joy', etc.), but at $2.00 each, they were starting to exhaust our budget for this project quickly.

So, basically, I'm hitting the creative readers of my journal (especially you VBSers!) up for some ideas of cheap, church-related things I can make for a bunch of junior high kids. They (the things, not the kids) will need to be small enough that 15-30 of them could fit in a 6"x6" Lock&Lock or standard-sized ammo can. Also, I'll need to be able to find all the ingredients and make them tomorrow. Anybody got any ideas?

You can take 2 nails and bind them in the shape of a cross with twine or string. It's a cross, made out of nails. Symbolism is pretty good there!

You can buy packets of seeds and small plastic bags. Divide up 4-5 seeds per bag. (Or if the seeds are cheap, then just a packet each.) Tell the kiddos they must plant the seeds of change/hope/light/whatever. There's a specific passage about this but it's at work and I am failing seminary right now by not remembering it!

You can put a penny in. Tell the kiddos they must "be the change they wish to see" in the world. Gandhi said that. Not Christian, but just as applicable.

Erasers - Jesus erases our sin.

Tea candles - be the light of the world. Again, I fail at the passages.

Oriental Trading Company always has GOBS of Christian stuff, but not sure when you need it by (this weekend?) so that might not work.

And then maybe you can get one each of the nice trinket stuff with some of these cheapo ideas?

We found some great Bible verse cards/bookmarks at Lifeway tonight and bought *eep* 300. (Thankfully, they were only $0.15 each). We took them all to the cash register in little piles of 10, separated by style, for easy ringing. The staff voted us "favorite customers of the week" in an impromptu awards ceremony. It was pretty funny.

Good ideas. I had already thought about the nail crosses, and wondered if they would be considered "weapons". Which, of course, would be fitting... I just don't know if it would be allowed.

I like the idea of the candles (plus, I have bags full from IKEA), but again with the fire. Of course, they shouldn't have matches. I probably worry too much.

Love the seeds! Might actually be able to swing that one.

OTC does have a bunch of stuff... I was looking at these earlier. I just don't have time to order anything. Pooh.

Thanks a bunch!
