Que Suerte!

Since beginning my Spanish classes earlier this summer, I've been haphazardly looking for opportunities to practice my new-found language skills outside of class (which has mostly consisted of repeated visits to our fine, local Mexican eateries).

Last month, I read an article in the Moravian Magazine about Cordero de Dios, the new Spanish Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, and their efforts to start a food pantry to serve the local Latino community. They were looking for volunteers to help collect, organize and distribute food. I was excited to read about the venture and about the potential opportunity to help out and work on my Spanish at the same time. The church is on the near side of Winston, but it's still about 20 miles from me, so I hadn't actively investigated the details of the program.

Earlier this week, I was reading the monthly newsletter from my associate congregation in Winston, and the main article was about Cordero de Dios and their need for English teachers/tutors. The church is planning to offer ESL classes to the community through a partnership with the YMCA, which will provide the materials and training. Could I ask for a better opportunity? I checked out the volunteer requirements and I appear to qualify for all of them. I left a message with the coordinator, so hopefully I will hear back soon!
