Will I see you tonight
On the downtown train?
Every night it's just the same
You leave me lonely.

Will I see you tonight
On the downtown train?
All my dreams they fall like rain
On the downtown train.

Actually, I think I could listen to "Burma Shave" and "Chocolate Jesus" on endless repeat. Everything else, though, not so much.

The piano has been drinking
My necktie's asleep
The combo went back to New York, and left me all alone
The jukebox has to take a leak
And the carpet needs a haircut
And the spotlight looks just like a prison break
And the telephone's out of cigarettes
As usual the balcony's on the make
And the piano has been drinking, heavily
The piano has been drinking
And he's on the hard stuff tonight

I am listening to the album Frank's Wild Years, inspired by the musical play ("Franks Wild Years) that Tom wrote with his wife in the 80's.

Subtitled "un operachi romantico in two acts", iTunes declares that the artist "seems most inspired by German art song and carnival music, presenting songs in spar, stripped-down arrangements consisting of instruments like marimba, baritone horn, and pump organ and singing in a strained voice that has been artificially compressed and distorted". Later, they get right to the point and state that one of the songs "has a winning melody, but it is played in a seesaw arrangement of pump organ, bass, violin, and piano, and Waits sings it like an enraged drunk".

I was palating it all very well--mostly as amusing background music--until "I'll Take New York", at which point his voice was like nails on a chalkboard to me and I just wanted to climb the walls. Still, I was compelled to listen. Ack.

Yeah, some of his stuff's pretty grating and discordant. I much prefer the more melodious stuff.
