TCM

I <3 Turner Classic Movies. And Ingrid Bergman. Lucky for me, it seems to be Ingrid Bergman night on TCM. I just watched Cactus Flower (a film I'd never heard of, though any movie that begins with a main character trying to off herself is bound to get my attention) and Adam Had Four Sons while doing my laundry.

Adam Had Four Sons (1941) was one of Ingrid's first Hollywood films, and Cactus Flower (1969) was her return to the American soundstage after being snubbed by Hollywood for nearly 20 years. Having a child out of wedlock (while--shh!--being married to another man) was quite the scandal in the 1940's, of course.

Watching these movies made me appreciate once again just how strong movie scripts could be back in the day. Well-written, witty dialogue can carry an entire film, without the need for over-the-top action scenes or special effects. I don't even care for Walter Matthau and the banter between Bergman and her dentist-boss (as well as the other characters) in Cactus Flower kept me entertained throughout the entire movie.

I also enjoyed seeing Goldie Hawn in her silver screen debut, in the role (Toni) for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Good stuff!
