I Am Pi

Victory is mine! I finally got to go swimming tonight!

On the drive over to the pool this evening, I was trying to remember the last time I went swimming. Lap swimming, that is. I took Advanced Lifeguarding and Swim Conditioning as my last two PEs in college (I don't remember in which order), so it had to be at least seven or eight years ago. I used to swim year-round--fall/winter for my school team and spring/summer for a TSA league in Raleigh. I had no idea how much exercise I was getting back then. That was a long time ago.

I was pleased to find the doors to the natatorium propped open when I got there, so I stopped at the desk and bought a pass on the way in. The Parks & Rec Department offers an adult swim pass (12 sessions for $15) for use at any of the area pools, otherwise it's $2/session to swim. They didn't bother to punch my card--lucky number 314!--before giving it to me, so I got to swim for free this evening.

I scoped out the locker rooms briefly, then headed straight for the pool. It's an 8-lane pool, plus a large deep end/diving well. The water was a perfect 82 degrees and the pH was just right. There were about 10 people there, and only one other person swimming laps. I hopped in. Here's what I did:

Warm-Up:
25 yds. (putting in my lane rope)

Overall, I was very happy with my performance. My goal was to swim a mile (71 laps) and I swam 74, with little deviation from my plan. My mistake was putting Fly six 100s into my stroke rotation. Ha! I was tired by that point. I should have put it first. Later, I threw in some extra Backstroke just to mix things up. I stuck to my interval for all the sprints, with plenty of time to rest in between. After a while, I'll back that down to 1:10 or so. I even threw in an extra sprint at the end of the workout to finish things on a high note.

I did notice while swimming my Backstroke that it took me 18 or 19 strokes to swim a lap; I think it used to take me 17. I kept reaching back at 17 for my flipturns and the wall would still be 3 feet away. Awkward, because I flip left for Backstroke. I'll attribute the extra stroke to tighter muscles and shorter glides off my turns for now. That should work itself out after a few more practices.

The best thing of all, though--the thing that I had forgotten--was that hot, buttery feeling you get in your shoulders, arms and back once you've been swimming for a while. Once my muscle memory kicked in and my body figured out what I was doing, I forgot all about being tired; the water felt fresh and cool again. I could have easily done another few hundreds!

In all, a good night. Great facilities, I met and talked with some nice people, and I found out that the pool's Winter Hours begin next week, so it should be open every night. I'm really looking forward to being a swimmer again.

Now I just need to go buy a new bottle of UltraSwim.

I changed that "several" to "few".

And I did mean hundred yards, not hundred laps!

Ok, the yards versus laps is an improvement...but still!

I did swimming for physical therapy (well, swimming and just walking in the pool) and after about 10 laps, I was DONE!

I was so excited to find the pool actually open when I got there, that I forgot to stretch before I started swimming. My neck is a little sore today, but all things considered, I think that's pretty good!
