Great Balls Of Fire!

How I want a plantation house. But along a river.

Last night, the good Doctor and I--along with sidelobe, beeler and BeckNut--went to see Gone With The Wind on the big screen at the restored Carolina Theatre downtown. I love the Classic Film Series they run there. We met across the street for dinner and drinks beforehand at Shucka's (an oyster bar), where they were out of oysters. A peculiar Monday night run on the tasty bivalves had rendered the restaurant devoid of the week's supply. Weird.

The movie was fantastic. Having caught it piecemeal on television numerous times, it was fabulous to see it on the silver screen and enjoy cheap popcorn simultaneously. And Vivien Leigh... it's hard to imagine they considered Lucille Ball for that role. I just can't picture her as Scarlett, except perhaps with Desi Arnaz as Rhett... anyway.

Each time I see this picture, the Southern belle in me can't help but feel an inkling of kinship with (I won't go so far as to say sympathy for) Scarlett, in spite of how frustrating she is. Her self-centeredness certainly is tedious, but then again, her indignation fuels that indomitable spirit--no stranger to even the most genteel of Southern women.

I'm left with this thought: The Old South may not rise again, but I feel inspired to resurrect some of the antiquated expressions from Miss Mitchell's famous book. The world could use a few more "fiddle-dee-dee"s and "I do declare"s.
