More H-2-Woes

I am hopping mad. HOPPING MAD, I tell you. I have tried to go swimming 5 times in the last three weeks. The pool has been closed EVERY DAMN TIME. Actually--to be more precise--I have been to the pool 7 or 8 times over the past month, but part of that was discovering they're only open for lap swimming three evenings a week. It's fittingly ironic that the first (and only) time I showed up when they were open, I didn't have my swimsuit with me because I stopped by on a whim on my way home from work.

I've quit writing about the scenario every time it happens because frankly, it's just part of my evening routine at this point: suit up, pack my bag, drive to the school, see the "closed" sign, walk down the sidewalk, read the explanation on the window (lately, they haven't even bothered to post why the pool is closed, or for how long), get back in my car, drive home. Thank goodness I only live 4 minutes from the pool; I'm usually back parked in the driveway 10 minutes after I've left. It takes longer to freakin' get dressed and throw my sweats together than it does to go find out they're closed.

Last night was different, though. I ran into other frustrated people outside the building. We commiserated. Two older men had somehow gotten wind that the pool had been closed for a couple of weeks and was supposed to open back up yesterday morning. Pshaa! They had shown up for the afternoon session and the doors had been locked. I encouraged them to send nasty emails to the Parks & Rec Department and the mayor's office.

They left and I met a girl about my own age (Jodie), so we had a nice little bonding-rant in the parking lot. It was actually kind of funny to run into someone else who had pursued every other avenue imaginable as far as swimming options available in Greensboro; we were able to stand there and quote off pool sizes, hours and prices for every gym, park, high school and university in town. At least I've found someone to share in my frustration. I'm sure we'll be running into each other again.

That sucks. There's no one you can call and complain to???

ALso, I am just now remembering that I read this article a few weeks ago about how there is a lifeguard shortage since high school kiddos are getting "real" summer jobs/internships to boost their resumes for college. Maybe that has something to do with it?

That's funny. I started wondering awhile back if they were always closed because they couldn't find enough lifeguards. But it's at a high school, for crying out loud. And there are 4 major colleges and universities practically within walking distance!

For a brief moment after that thought occurred to me, I considered applying for a summer job as a lifeguard myself, except that my certifications haven't been renewed since college. I mean, how cool would that be? While the other responsible adults I know get up and go to real jobs, I could go be a pool bum all day! ;)

That would be awesome. You would get paid to do something you want to do anyway!!!

I say go for it!! =)

I should have known I should have asked you about pools.

Instead I started calling gym after gym being told they didn't have a pool.

How can a gym not have a pool? I mean ok, I was asking for a jacuzzi too, but I would have gladly settled just for a pool.

I ended up joining the Y. Their hours are kinda lame and they only have an indoor pool, no jacuzzi. As I'm sure you already know.

So where is it that you ended up wanting to go but can't seem to go?

And when do you want to go for soap?

And where do you go to get a haircut?

Have the best

There are a million gyms in Greensboro. Almost zero of them have pools appropriate for lap swimming, which led me to my current approach: Lots of the area high schools offer swimming through the Parks & Rec Department. Unfortunately, Grimsley (right around the corner) never seems to be open. If all else fails, I'll cave and join the Y, since there are apparently two nice pools in the one closest to me.

Soap: I'm taking the MSF course this weekend, so Fri-Sat-Sun are out. Do you know if the soap place is open in the evenings? Otherwise, we might be looking at the following weekend, which I think we have free.

As for haircuts, I don't know that I can be much help. I've tried several different salons since moving to town, but have yet to find one that really impressed me. With long hair, though, my needs aren't really as technical, and I've been happier just cutting mine myself. :| However, if you ever run across someone who's really into the possibilities that long hair presents, I might be interested in giving them a shot at my locks!

The following weekend is beach weekend.

I'll check into what hours the store is open. The lady I work with might know.

I think I got the kind of Y membership that lets you go to a few different Ys around here. Does the Y by you have an outdoor pool or just two indoor?

Its so hard to find someone to trust for a haircut.

Have the best

Man, we're just too busy. I'm think it's the weekend after that that we're doing our concert mini-tour. We'll figure something out!

The Metro Membership lets you go to all the different Ys in Greensboro/Guilford County. The one by us (downtown) is the Bryan Family Y, which has two indoor pools (far as I know). Apparently, they have a very nice exer-bike/machine room with "spectacular view of downtown" (or something) according to their website. If you're allowed to take visitors, we should go check that one out sometime! I think they're open til 9 Mon-Sat and 6 on Sunday.
